"along the avenue of hope, footsteps falter, fingers grope; and the days stretch out beneath the sun.
no-one's born, and no-one dies, no-one lives, so no-one cries; and we wait to see just what we have become."

This is so fucking ridiculous. Animal testing is done, in every authorized research organization, under strict scrutiny and regulation. If a proposed experiment goes before the testing board and the researcher can’t guarantee the animal’s comfort and minimize its exposure to pain, the research project is not authorized. Proposals that are designed to test the pain response of animals are extremely rare and done under even stricter scrutiny. I work in biomedical research; I’ve seen animal testing firsthand. They take better care of the animals than the underpaid staff that neglect the elderly in our hospitals, I can tell you that.
And before people get all pissed off because they’re anthropomorphizing the expression on a puppy’s face, remember that most of the reason any of us, or any of the animals we can treat under veterinary care, have the benefit of modern medicine, is through animal testing. Does abuse exist in research? Absolutely. Does that mean it’s cause to abandon animal research? Absolutely not. There exist no methods that can serve as substitutes for critical drug testing, for example. We should attack the abusive practices when they exist instead of going after something that’s brought hope and health to billions of people.
If you want to go after an entire field, where is the outrage with factory farms and the entire meat industry? There’s an industry that reaps and sows pure cruelty and environmental damage- let’s start with the big hitters first, maybe? And then we can go after animal testing once we’ve all decided that modern medicine is shit and we’d prefer to let ourselves and our loved ones (human or not) die of the fucking flu.
Fuck.
sheldrakillher:

For medical experimentation animals can be burned, shocked, poisoned, isolated, starved, forcibly restrained, addicted to drugs, and brain-damaged— no procedures or experiments, regardless of how trivial or painful they may be, are prohibited by law. When valid non-animal research methods are available, no law requires experimenters to use such methods instead of animals.

RIP NANCY WAKE (30 August 1912 – 7 August 2011)
Ms Wake, who has died in London just before her 99th birthday, was a New Zealander brought up in Australia. She became a nurse, a journalist who interviewed Adolf Hitler, a wealthy French socialite, a British agent and a French resistance leader. She led 7,000 guerrilla fighters in battles against the Nazis in the northern Auvergne, just before the D-Day landings in 1944. On one occasion, she strangled an SS sentry with her bare hands. On another, she cycled 500 miles to replace lost codes. In June 1944, she led her fighters in an attack on the Gestapo headquarters at Montlucon in central France.
Work began earlier this month on a feature film about Nancy Wake’s life. Ms Wake, one of the models for Sebastian Faulks’ fictional heroine, Charlotte Gray, had mixed feelings about previous cinematic efforts to portray her wartime exploits, including a TV mini-series made in 1987.
“It was well-acted but in parts it was extremely stupid,” she said. “At one stage they had me cooking eggs and bacon to feed the men. For goodness’ sake, did the Allies parachute me into France to fry eggs and bacon for the men? There wasn’t an egg to be had for love nor money. Even if there had been why would I be frying it? I had men to do that sort of thing.”
Ms Wake was also furious the TV series suggested she had had a love affair with one of her fellow fighters. She was too busy killing Nazis for amorous entanglements, she said.
Even before she escaped to Britain, through Spain, in 1943 to train as a guerrilla leader, Nancy had been top of the Gestapo’s French “wanted” list. With her husband, she ran a resistance network which helped to smuggle Jews and allied airmen out of the country.
Nancy recalled later in life that her parachute had snagged in a tree. The French resistance fighter who freed her said he wished all trees bore “such beautiful fruit”. Nancy retorted: “Don’t give me that French shit.”

“I sometimes visualize the ongoing cycle of racism as a moving walkway at the airport. Active racist behavior is equivalent to walking fast on the conveyor belt. The person engaged in active racist behaviour has identified with the ideology of White supremacy and is moving with it. Passive racist behaviour is equivalent to standing still on the walk way. No overt effort is being made, but the conveyor belt moves the bystanders along to the same destination as those who are actively walking. Some of the bystanders may feel the motion of the conveyor belt, see the active racists ahead of them, and choose to turn around, unwilling to go to the same destination as the White supremacists. But unless they are walking actively in the opposite direction at a speed faster than the conveyor belt - unless they are actively antiracist - they will find themselves carried along with the others.” Beverly Daniel Tatum, an excerpt from “Why are All the Black Kids Sitting Together in the Cafeteria?” (via pnasty)

“-trigger warning for rape-

I think the word ‘raped’ gets thrown around far too casually. You ever listen to a bunch of guys playing video games with each other online? It’s like, ‘Ah man you shot me in the back dude. You raped me dude!’ I’m pretty sure if I talked to a woman who’s been through that horrific situation and I said, ‘What was it like, you know, being raped?’ she’s not gonna look at me and go, ‘Have you ever played Halo?’

Dane Cook. (via gaywitchpracticingabortion)

This. This this this. I have tried SO hard to get my guild on WoW to stop using the word “rape” to describe situations that aren’t, well, RAPE.

(via getinthehandbasket)

I tell my brother every time he throws around the word ‘raped’ in a casual conversation to mean ‘lost badly’ to cut it out. He still doesn’t get it, even after explaining it many times. I’ve had this conversation one to many times with some of my guy friends. This only perpetrates the notion that rape is a joking matter and doesn’t need to be taken seriously.

(via feministslut)

Wow. Dane Cook. I wasn’t expecting that name under this quote; color me pleasantly surprised.

(via supersandy1984)

I’m going to link you guys to the video where he said this. I found it on Youtube. As much as I’m like, “Fuck yeah, Dane Cook.” his comments about “That’s so gay!” are innappropriate imo.
